Friendly people

People in Sri Lanka is generally very friendly, as I have already said in most blogposts. Yesterday a friend of our driver, who is working in this hotel we now are staying in, introduced himself to us and we became good friends, one of the most friendly person I have ever met. I can't believe how easygoing they are down here, they are so openhearted and sincerely happy to help- and talk to people. So, he told us the inspiring story of how he grew up fatherless with nine brothers and sisters, and he almost got us weeping. His strong mother tried to feed the whole family of ten children, but every day she did not succeed. Now, many years later, thanks to their will to educate, all the children except from those who passed away had great jobs as teachers and lawyers. Himself is a student to become a lawyer and work here in tourist season to make ends meet, its not as easy to become a student here as in the rest of the world. He had to take a test and only a handful out of fifteen thousand people got in. Very impressing, coming from this extremely poor background. And, such a nice guy! We told him a bit of Sweden and he told us everything about Sri Lanka, it was really interesting and we had many great laughes.

But everybody is not nice even in Sri Lanka. Obviously. Because we read in Aftonbladet that a swedish woman is missing here - in this very village we are visiting at the moment, Mirissa. It appears she was last seen here with two men, after writing a desperate note on Facebook that she had been abused and locked up. So you see why I won't let Jessica go around on her own here, we keep together. This new friend of ours wasn't surprised, he said that many people also here are dangerous, violent and greedy. Because of the desperation of being poor, he thought, but also because we are human beings. And everywhere you go there are some bad people. We agreed and went to sleep that night feeling lucky because we had not met any of those really bad people here. I hope we wont, and we pray that the missing girl will be found alive and in good health.
